Referencing a poem from Nizar Qabbani, this collaborative workshop will experiment with sound as a medium to explore Doha’s ‘imagined’ sonic landscape by remixing past and present. Participants will use the Doha metro and existing landmarks as a guide to gathering sounds from field recording and voice recording with the intent to capture personal geographic memories and community stories. Together we will use the collection of recordings to compose a newly synthesized soundscape through modulation and manipulation using various electronic instruments and software.

The workshop will be a series of four 90-minute sessions on Saturday and Sunday evenings (October 22, 23, 29, 30), starting at 6:30 pm and ending at 8 pm.

- Session one will be at the Fire Station as an overview.

- Session two will be field recording on site.

- Sessions three and four will be at VCUarts Qatar in Education City to edit and compose sounds. We seek participants who can be present for all four sessions and able to explore select areas of Doha (Msheireb, Souq Waqif, the Corniche, MIA park, Al Matar Al Qadeem St.).

Previous experience with sound editing is not be required.

The workshop will be led by Hadeel Eltayeb, Fire Station past Curator in residence 2021-22,  in collaboration with Sonic Jeel.

The workshop can accommodate 10-12 participants who will be selected from an application process.
