TALK | Arab Women Artists Today: Sama Alshaibi

Wednesday, March 24, 2021

Decolonizing Art Narratives: Arab Women Artists Today is an online lecture series that is a collaboration between VCUarts Qatar, the Painting and Printmaking Department, and the Fire Station. This lecture series brings together critical female Arab voices in Art and Design. The fourth speaker in this series is Sama Alshaibi.

Sama Alshaibi is an Iraqi-Palestinian artist and professor of photography, video, and imaging at the University of Arizona, Tucson. Her practice examines the mechanisms of fragmentation in the aftermath of war and exile.

This year-long academic year lecture-series presents a dynamic group of Arab female artists and practitioners across disciplines and locales in the Middle East, exploring gender, politics, colonialism, culture, and identity. This lecture series asks: How might we revisit and reformat existing narratives? The lectures as a whole reinforce the focus theme - the pursuit of decolonized art narratives.

This talk will be moderated by art critic and curator Beral Madra.

The talks will take place online on Zoom. Attendance is free and open to the public. Please register online ahead of the event.
