This exhibition explores drawing and works on paper as an ongoing fundamental medium in creative and artistic practices. Whether it is to sketch, increase productivity, inspire thought, or to evoke ideas, paper would not only support artists’ processes, but can also be a significant medium itself.

On Paper  is an exhibition showcasing the work of some current and past residents of the Fire Station: Artist in Residence program. This exhibition features work by Maryam Alameri, Sarah Al-Ansari, Abdulla Al-Kuwari, Roda Al-Khori, Shouq Al-Mana, Yasser Al-Mulla, Fatma Al-Remaihi, Lolwa Alsolaiti, Mohammed Faraj Al-Suwaidi, Nourbanu Hijazi, Eman Makki and Hassan Manasrah.

Organized and curated by Alanoud Ahmed Al-Buainain & Saida Ali Al-Khulaifi.

Maryam Al Ameri holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) from Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar (VCU Arts Qatar). She is in residence at the Fire Station, 2018-19.

Sarah Al-Ansari received her BFA in Painting from Middle Tennessee State University in 2015. She is in residence at the Fire Station, 2018-19.

Roda Al-Khori holds a BFA from VCU Arts Qatar, majoring in Painting and Printmaking. She experiments with different mediums and processes, including painting, and installations. She is in residence at the Fire Station, 2018-19.

Abdulla Al-Kuwari received his BFA in Painting and Printmaking from VCU Arts Qatar in 2014. He participated in a residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, France in 2017. His work has been exhibited at Katara Art Center (2016), Kathmandu Triennale (2017), and a solo exhibition at the Fire Station (2018). He is in residence at the Fire Station, 2018-19.

Shouq Al-Mana received her BFA from VCU Arts Qatar, majoring in Painting and Printmaking. She was in residence at the Fire Station in 2017-18. Her work has been exhibited at the Garage Gallery in Fire Station (2018) and in Manege Central Exhibition Hall in St. Petersburg as part of the Qatar Contemporary  exhibition (2018). and She had her first solo show at Katara Art Center (KAC) in 2018.

Yasser Al-Mulla is an artist with a background in Law as well as engineering. He was in residence at the Fire Station in 2017-18. His work has been exhibited at the Garage Gallery in Fire Station (2018) and in Manege Central Exhibition Hall in St. Petersburg as part of the Qatar Contemporary  exhibition (2018).

Fatma Al-Remaihi holds a BFA from VCU Arts Qatar, and has a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She was in residence at the Fire Station in 2015-16. Her work has been exhibited at the Garage Gallery in Fire Station (2016) and in Kraftwerk Berlin as part of the Contemporary Art Qatar  exhibition (2017).

Lolwa Alsolaiti holds a BFA from VCU Arts Qatar, majoring in Painting and Printmaking with a minor in Art History. She has contributed to group exhibitions in the Fire Station Annex and Art29 in W Doha. She is in residence at the Fire Station, 2018-19.

Mohammed Faraj Al-Suwaidi is an integrative architect, animator and designer. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from Plymouth University, and his Master of Arts in Architecture from the University of Liverpool.  He is in residence at the Fire Station, 2018-19.

Nourbanu Hijazi is a multidisciplinary artist. She has an MFA in Design Studies from VCU Arts Qatar. Her works aim to explore the human condition from philosophical and psychological perspectives, through surreal and mythological themes. She is in residence at the Fire Station, 2018-19.

Eman Makki has a BFA in Graphic Design from VCU Arts Qatar. In her work, she explores the idea of generative art by creating code-written work that is produced by machines. She is in residence at the Fire Station, 2018-19.

Hassan Manasrah is multidisciplinary artist. He studied applied arts at Al- Balqa' Applied University in Jordan and graphic arts at the Institute of Fine Arts in Jordan. He also studied the art of engraving and printing by specialists at the Jordanian National Museum of Fine Arts. He is in residence at the Fire Station, 2018-19.
