EXHIBITION | Jawaher Almannai: The Desert Ode

Wednesday, December 9, 2020 to Saturday, January 23, 2021

In “The Desert Ode” Jawaher Almannai’s gives tribute to the palm tree and its symbolism. She was inspired by it during her Paris Residency in the autumn when trees shed their leaves. Picking up the leaves and inspecting their details and colors, nostalgia took her back to Qatar and its palm trees. To Almannai, looking at the tree is reassuring, sitting under it is considered safety and its greenery represents purity and serenity. Folklore heritage and Arab poets have likened it to the giving woman, a symbol of life and fulfillment, with its diffused edges likened to nourished hair.

Jawaher Almannai is a visual artist who focuses on creating abstract paintings through experimenting with different materials, mediums and symbols. She aims to show Qatari women’s creativity reflecting on day to day social norms. Almannai participated in the Fire Station International Exchange Program at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris from September to December, 2019.
